The court, presided by Magistrate Abigail Critien, heard Lawyer Charles Mercieca, who is representing Petroni, argue against the validity of his client’s arrest, as the inquiry has not been concluded.Īfter hearing the prosecution, led by Inspector Godwin Scerri, describe how the defendant was arrested on site because the police could smell alcohol on his person, the court declared the arrest valid. Petroni is being charged with involuntary homicide. The Yamaha Crypton motorcycle collided with a Smart Fortwo car, driven by the defendant, who in court testified that he works as a Logistics Manager. One was certified dead at the scene, while the other one succumbed to his injuries in hospital. The victims were a 41 year old man and a 33 year old man, both Pakistani nationals living in St Paul’s Bay, who were travelling by motorcycle. Muhammad was pronounced dead on the scene while Abbas died in hospital. The victims are Faizan Muhammad, 33, and Ali Abbas, 41. Karl Vella Petroni, 41, from Mellieħa, has been arraigned in court on Monday afternoon, in relation to the traffic accident in Mosta which left two persons dead on Saturday.
